Job description
At ChainCraft, we are turning chemistry circular. We develop sustainable biotechnological processes that convert food waste into valuable bio-based fatty acids. Our scale-up is entering an exciting growth phase and we are looking for a Mechanical & Piping Engineer who is eager to grow into a senior role and help build long-term expertise in mechanical, piping engineering and industrial safety within ChainCraft.
Your role
As our Mechanical & Piping Engineer, you will play an important role in the development of a first-of-its-kind full-scale plant. This is a unique opportunity for an engineer who wants to develop further in complex industrial projects and translate innovative technological knowledge into practical engineering solutions for a pioneering facility.
You will be part of our growing Engineering team in Amsterdam alongside experienced experts in their respective disciplines, reporting to the Lead Project Engineer Process Mechanical. You will focus on mechanical and piping engineering activities and work closely with process engineers, project managers and specialised technology suppliers to support the overall project design. You will contribute to the design, specification and technical coordination with piping, mechanical, and plant auxiliary and utility contractors for full-scale projects, starting with FS1 in Ter Apelkanaal. You will be actively involved throughout the project lifecycle, from concept and detailed design to construction support and commissioning, while developing your technical ownership step by step.
You support the project team by helping translate process requirements into safe, reliable and operable engineering solutions, balancing innovation with compliance and constructability. You will work on system integration and ensure alignment between mechanical, piping and process disciplines.
Key responsibilities
- Support mechanical and piping engineering activities within projects: you contribute to technical discussions with contractors, suppliers and engineering partners during design and execution phases. You review engineering deliverables such as specifications, drawings, models, MTOs and datasheets, and help ensure that inputs are complete, coordinated and compliant.
- Develop and optimise mechanical, piping, utility and auxiliary systems: you translate process requirements into practical engineering solutions. You assist in analysing system requirements, routing, materials, valves and constructability, and review 3D/BIM models, tie-ins and installation methods together with senior engineers.
- Provide technical support during construction, commissioning and start-up: you help troubleshoot issues, support installation activities, and validate system functionality during commissioning and start-up, learning how engineering decisions translate into real plant operation.
- Contribute to health, safety and environmental compliance: you support the integration of safety, permitting and regulatory requirements into technical designs. You work with senior engineers on safety-in-design principles, functional safety activities and environmental considerations such as energy efficiency and emissions reduction.
- Maintain engineering documentation and support standardisation: you assist in maintaining clear and structured technical documentation, including functional descriptions, operating procedures, maintenance philosophies and interface registers. You support progress tracking and help ensure documentation is complete for project handover.
About you
You are a hands-on mechanical or piping engineer with a solid technical foundation and a strong interest in working on complex industrial installations. You are eager to learn how engineering works not only on paper, but also in real operational environments.
You combine technical curiosity with a practical mindset. You like to solve problems, take initiative and improve systems. You enjoy working in multidisciplinary teams and are motivated to grow towards a senior engineering role by taking on increasing responsibility over time.
You are pragmatic, down-to-earth and collaborative. You work well with process engineers, project managers, suppliers and contractors, and you are comfortable asking questions and learning from experienced colleagues. You are driven by innovation and sustainability and want to make a tangible impact on ChainCraft’s technology.
Experience or exposure to commissioning, maintenance or plant operations is a plus, as it helps you understand how designs translate into daily operations.
You bring
- A completed HBO/bachelor’s degree in mechanical or piping engineering, or similar.
- At least 5 years of experience in mechanical and/or piping engineering within complex Capex projects. Experience within the wastewater treatment, green chemical industry, or food industry is a plus.
- Experience or exposure to mechanical and piping design, specifications and engineering standards.
- Interest in working with static and rotating equipment, piping systems, utilities and 3D/BIM models.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of industrial health, safety and environmental requirements, with willingness to develop further.
- Ability and motivation to grow towards leading technical responsibilities over time.
- Strong communication skills in English; Dutch proficiency or willingness to learn.
- Interest in contributing to a first-of-a-kind plant in Ter Apelkanaal, with regular site visits during project phases.
We offer
At ChainCraft, you contribute to a better world by making sustainable innovation a reality. We offer a stimulating and informal environment with an international team that shares a mission to replace fossil and palm-based chemicals with circular alternatives.
